Welcome — Why I'm Writing Here
A quick intro to who I am, what I write about, and why this newsletter exists.
I’m a product management consultant, AI coach, professor at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, and writer. I’ve spent 20+ years in product — as a PM, a Director of Product (General Assembly), an Interim Head of Product (OnDeck), and now as someone who helps teams figure out what to build and why.
I also built OTUS, an AI-powered learning platform for PMs, because apparently, teaching in classrooms wasn’t enough, and I needed to teach robots how to teach people, too.
What I write about:
Product strategy. Metrics. AI in product work. How teams build things well. The occasional opinion nobody asked for.
I believe AI is commoditizing execution speed, shifting the competitive edge to strategy. I find that shift fascinating — and I write about it when I have something worth saying. No fixed schedule. No content calendar. No “10 Tips to Hack Your Productivity.” Everything is free.
This newsletter is an extension of the writing I’ve been doing at vincelaw.co/blog. I’m moving it here to Substack so it’s easier to subscribe, follow along, and actually have conversations.
If you’re new, start here:
WTF is Strategy? — Everyone talks about strategy, but half the room can’t define it.
4 Steps to Defining GREAT Metrics for ANY Product — A framework (GAME) you can use for new products, existing ones, and PM interviews.
WTF is a Metric? — Why this may be the single most important thing you’ll do as a PM.
WTF is a Product Manager? — A practical intro to the role for aspiring PMs.
A bit about me outside of work:
My MBA students know me for “Vince’s 6 Cs,” which, unfortunately for them, have nothing to do with strategy frameworks. They are: Coffee, Cooking, Cycling, Cars, Cats, and Childcare. That’s roughly how I spend my time when I’m not obsessing over product metrics or arguing with LLMs.
